Historic Mount Seymour Church – unique lifestyle opportunity.
A rare piece of Tasmanian history - the former Mount Seymour church, a charming property deeply connected to the Southern Midlands region offering a truly unique lifestyle or restoration opportunity.
Construction on the church began in late 1898, with the foundation stone laid on 9 November by Reverend L. Campbell of Oatlands. A commemorative silver-plated mallet, crafted from sheoak and blackwood, was presented to mark the occasion. Although progress was slow, the building officially opened in May 1901, with final interior works completed ahead of a reopening in September 1902.
Historical records from the time describe a vibrant reopening service attended by a large congregation, complete with visiting vocalists and the re-establishment of the local Sunday school—highlighting the church’s importance as a community hub.
The church continued to serve the community for decades, hosting some important events. Celebrating 100 years of Presbyterianism in 1954; becoming part of the Uniting Church in 1977 and the marking of its 90th anniversary in 1992. Services ceased a few years later, and the property was sold in 2008, concluding nearly 150 years of religious significance in Mount Seymour.
Today, the property offers both charm and practicality, with the following thoughtful improvements already in place:
- A 2-bedroom cabin with kitchen & bathroom/laundry—ideal for living onsite while restoring the church or as a rental opportunity
- 9m x 12m Colorbond double garage with workshop space
- Water tanks & septic system
- Secure timber fencing with automatic gates
- Established country-style gardens
Originally settled in 1828 as “Blue Hills,” Mount Seymour is known for its picturesque landscapes and rich farming heritage. The area offers peaceful rural living while remaining accessible to Oatlands (15 minutes drive), 50 minutes to Orford/East
School bus services and a postal delivery are available, making it a practical choice for families or those seeking a rural retreat in the Southern Midlands.
This is a rare opportunity to own a distinctive historic property with endless potential—whether you envision a restoration project, a unique residence, or a tranquil getaway.
