Overview

Historic Stace House, originally the Dover Castle Inn c.1840

Georgian houses in Tasmania are highly sought after for their beautiful symmetrical design, but also, as part of our love affair to own an early part of Australia's early colonial past and architectural history. Tasmania has the largest collection of intact colonial and Georgian houses in Australia and Stace House, built in 1840 is no exception. Originally built as the Dover Castle Inn, the property is currently a private residence and also well suited as a weekender, or accommodation venture. Many of the Georgian buildings in Pontville were constructed from the late 1820's. Thomas Stace purchased two blocks of land in 1838 and had a substantial house built. In the 1840 Census, it is listed as partially completed and by 1842 it was in the possession of the owner, Thomas Stace (who arrived in Hobart Town in 1824). Known originally as The Dover Castle Inn, it was a colonial inn, a school, a shop and Post Office. Stace unfortunately became insolvent and the Dover Castle Inn was advertised for sale. It remained a Post Office until 1970 when it was reverted back to a private residence. The property remains one of the oldest houses in the historic township of Pontville. The 224m2 (approx.) 3-storey sandstone residence is a prominent landmark in Pontville. The charming green front door with distinctive fanlights and hallway leads to a large library, dining room, formal living room, master bedroom, and bathroom. Below, on ground level, is the kitchen, a beautiful and charming sitting/dining room/ breakfast nook with a fireplace and the original bread oven. On this floor is another lounge/bedroom, bathroom and 2 huge storage rooms, and the convict cellar. The attic rooms comprise of 2 charming large bedrooms with traditional dormer windows. All the rooms are beautifully proportioned with garden or distant views. The 6812m2 (approx.) established garden is abundant with native and deciduous trees, flower beds, fruit trees, stonewalling and includes the old weatherboard stables. There is scope for the gardening enthusiast to expand on the design of the garden down to the bordering Jordan River, where Platypus may occasionally be seen. Both the river and garden is a sanctuary for wildlife it is also home to Echidnas, Wombats, Bandicoots, and other marsupials. Birdlife is abundant, particularly in Springtime with Blue Wrens, Pardalotes, New Holland Honeyeaters, Doves, Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos, Rosellas, and the occasional Swift Parrots who are attracted by the nectar-bearing trees and water. The property is serviced by town water and mains power. Stace House is well located in the historic township of Pontville. Established in 1821, the town is known for its grand mansions, early colonial cottages, and churches. It is also home to the Shene Stables now Lark Distillery. Hobart and the Hobart Airport is only a short 30 minute drive. The property has the advantage of country living but within close distance of shops, schools and medical services. Stace House offers a unique and affordable opportunity to secure one of Pontville's important historic country houses, perfectly suited as a tourism venture, weekend country escape, or a private family home.
