In 1987, a couple built a house on a former grazing paddock on The Scenic Road, fringed with remnant eucalypts.
They had always been keen gardeners. Walks through places like Bouddi National Park made them fall in love with Australian natives, and from the day the land was theirs, they began creating a haven for native plants and wildlife.
Over almost four decades, they turned 2.5 acres of cleared farmland into Morvah, a celebrated, award-winning garden. Clumps of indigenous trees frame long vistas, and garden rooms and secret spaces reveal themselves one at a time.
A deep native screen wraps the home in privacy and draws in an abundance of wildlife. Outside the main bedroom, a two-tiered frog and fish pond sits between grass trees. Water slips beneath a small weathered timber bridge from the upper pond to the lower, a tranquil place to sit and let the afternoon pass. At the rear, a fully enclosed orchard and vegetable patch carry on the garden's working life.
Built by its owners and never before offered for sale, the house is single-level and mid-century modern in style. It is designed to bring the outside in, with wide window frontage giving close and unique views of the birdlife. It has three bedrooms plus a study and two bathrooms, and a separate studio off the garage offers flexible space for work, creativity, visiting family or a teenage retreat.
Macmasters Beach is a few minutes away by car, or a short walk, with a morning coffee at Zacs Coffee Shack along the way. The start of the Bouddi National Park walks is about 10 minutes away, the same bushland that first inspired this garden. Kincumber Shopping Centre is a 5-minute drive, and Sydney's CBD is around 90 minutes by car.
This is a deceased estate, and the first time Morvah has changed hands. What was begun in 1987 now passes on to its next lucky custodians.
