Wyalong House, believed to be the first permanent residence built in Wyalong, dates back to the late 1890s. Originally constructed for Frederick Neeld, the man credited with discovering gold in the region, the home tells a remarkable story of the district's early days. The front of the house is built from bricks brought from Yass via bullock dray-though legend has it the remaining bricks never made it, becoming bogged in Barmedman and later used to build a hotel there. As a result, the rear of the home was completed in traditional weatherboard. This character-rich residence showcases period features such as rose glass front doors and two original marble fireplaces imported from Italy-one in the loungeroom and another in the front bedroom. The home is also said to have hosted a visiting English Duke, who stayed in the front bedroom. Two fully restored wells, one in the driveway and another at the rear, are cleverly connected, holding a combined capacity of approx. 60,000 gallons. An electric pump feeds water from the rear well to a 1000L tank atop the original pump house, servicing the gardens and fruit trees. The hand pump on the side well remains operational with priming. Extensive restoration has been completed, including full reroofing, new verandahs, repainting and the restoration of original ironwork. Downpipes are now connected to the well system, blending charm with clever functionality.
