In the gentle rise of Goulburn Street, where the rhythm of old Hobart lingers in brick and sandstone, stands the western half of the historic Bulls Head Hotel. First constructed in 1828, this rare building carries the weight and wonder of its early years, yet steps forward with renewed clarity following an award winning restoration by Circa Architecture.
The renovation does not overwrite the past. It listens to it. Original timbers, stone, and time softened details remain central to the experience, creating a home where history is present without feeling heavy. Circa Architecture's approach introduces contemporary comfort while preserving the quiet dignity of the structure, allowing old and new to settle naturally alongside one another.
The lower level sets the tone for the rest of the home. A generous galley kitchen and dining area form the heart of daily life, shaped by strikingly high ceilings that lift the space and bring in a calm, open feel. A few steps lead to a small landing at the front door, which flows into a welcoming living room where a feature fireplace draws the eye and anchors the room.
From the dining area, a doorway reveals a well considered bathroom with floor heating, a European style laundry, and a restful bedroom with built in wardrobes. A short stairway nearby leads to a remarkable cellar that has been transformed into a whisky bar. Its original floor remains untouched and offers a rare connection to what was most likely the hotel's earliest cellar.
Opposite the front door, a staircase leads to the upper level. Here, a simple study nook sits above the kitchen and dining area, creating a secluded workspace that looks quietly over the activity below. This level also features the main bedroom, complete with a walk in robe and an ensuite with floor heating, forming a private and refined retreat.
Beyond the interior, two car spaces and a pretty enclosed courtyard garden at the rear entrance complete the picture, bringing practicality and outdoor appeal to a property that carries almost two centuries of story within its walls.
