The site was originally part of an 8.5-acre parcel acquired by Samuel Johnson on 24 June 1911 for £340. Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1855, Johnson was instrumental in establishing the South Australian Adult Deaf Society and became a well-known figure of his time. In 1913, a substantial dwelling was constructed on the land. The property holds historical significance through its association with Johnson and his pioneering work with the deaf community in South Australia.
