LAST SATURDAY.....
There is a quiet luxury that comes with living at 29 Normanby Road, and it has very little to do with the home itself.
It is the luxury of leaving the car exactly where it is.
There is an old saying that true luxury is not measured by what one owns, but by how one spends one's time.
It occurred to us again last Saturday.
The morning began, as so many do here, with a leisurely walk into the village for coffee and the newspaper. There was no urgency and no destination beyond enjoying the familiar rhythm of Sorrento before wandering home through its quiet streets.
Later in the afternoon, we found ourselves strolling to the football ground to watch the Sharks play. Children chased footballs on the boundary, old friends stopped to chat, and for a few hours life moved at the gentle pace that has always distinguished this remarkable coastal town.
As the day softened into evening, we walked to Coppins Lookout with a small flask tucked into our bag and sat quietly as the last light disappeared across Bass Strait. It is one of those simple rituals that never appears on a floor plan and yet somehow becomes one of the greatest privileges of living here.
Only then did we reflect on what makes Normanby so special.
The village, the back beach, the football ground, coastal walks and some of Victoria's most beautiful scenery are not destinations requiring planningthey are simply part of everyday life, all within easy walking distance of home.
Houses can be designed, renovated and rebuilt.
What is infinitely harder to create is a place that quietly becomes part of the way you live.
After all the years we have spent at Normanby, we have come to realise that the home is only half the story.
The other half is Sorrento itself.
29 Normanby Road, Sorrento
Some addresses tell you where you live.
The rare ones tell you how.
