Over the years old newspaper reports provide interesting insight into the history of the building. According to some reports Fredrick Lipscombe commissioned the property to be built between 1838 and 1842. Known as the Beach Tavern the residence was promoted as ‘the centre of horse racing on the beach' when horseracing was a regular and well attended activity at Long Beach. The tavern offered fourteen bedrooms, stabling for six horses and a large garden. The property was sold in 1860 and converted to a private prestige residence retaining the prized right-of-way to Nutgrove beach, now a public right of way.
